A story for every victim

Raymond Cortez, 16

Raymond Cortez, 16, a Latino youth, was shot while leaving Paramount High School on Friday, Nov. 30, at 3:25 p.m.; he was taken off life support two days later.

He was walking from the crowded campus at Downey and 2nd Street when a car with two young men inside drove up. One got out, gun in hand--a young man who had harassed Raymond in the past, and who had recently attempted to steal Raymond's bicycle, said sheriff's Lt. Al Grotefund.

"Remember me?" the assailant said to Raymond, then gave a gang moniker. There was a brief conversation, then an attack. Raymond fought back briefly. The suspect shot him in the head. Raymond lay dying in front of other young people leaving the school.

Paramount High School students rose to the occasion: The suspects, caught in school traffic, were slow getting away, and that gave these young witnesses enough time to get a license plate number, which they handed over to police.

Their help enabled the police to swiftly arrest the young Latino driver of the car, and to name a suspected shooter, 21-year-old Enrique Borrayo (below), who is still at large. Anyone who knows Borrayo's  whereabouts is asked to call the sheriff's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.

Raymond was taken to Long Beach Memorial Hospital. His family donated his organs. He was taken off life support on Sunday, Dec. 2. at 6:29 a.m.
