San Pedro man admits fatally shooting his wife in 2015
A San Pedro man was sentenced Dec. 12 to 19 years in prison for killing his wife in 2015.
George Matsumoto, 77, pleaded guilty on Nov. 1, 2017, to one count of second-degree murder in the shooting death of Mary Matsumoto, 72.
Mary Matsumoto’s daughter asked police on Jan. 14, 2015, for a welfare check on her mother, who had not been heard from for several days, prosecutors said. The daughter told police that her stepfather kept weapons in the house and the couple were having marital problems, LAPD Det. Greg Halka said.
Officers found Mary Matsumoto in bed with three gunshot wounds to her head, prosecutors said. She had been dead at least a day, according to coroner’s records.
George Masumoto was at home but was unresponsive, according to prosecutors. He subsequently was arrested and charged in connection with his wife’s slaying.
During trial, prosecutors argued that George Matsumoto thought his wife was having an affair, but there was no evidence to support those accusations.
