Man sentenced to 122 years to life for killing 38-year-old man in front of a boy in Long Beach

A 35-year-old man was sentenced last week to 122 years to life in prison for fatally shooting a man in front of a 6-year-old boy in Long Beach in 2017, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

A jury found Jason Monroe Daniels guilty July 9 of second-degree murder, child abuse that could cause great bodily injury and possession of a firearm by a felon, prosecutors said.

A jury also found true other gun allegations.

On April 19, 2017, Daniels visited an ex-girlfriend’s family home in Long Beach and became angry when he saw William Luther Hayes, 38, spending time with his ex’s 6-year-old son, according to prosecutors.

Daniels walked up to Hayes, shot him in front of the boy, then fled to Las Vegas. He was arrested by authorities two weeks later.
