$50,000 reward offered in Broadway-Manchester shooting death

Officials announced last week that they are actively investigating the shooting death of Jewell King, a 54-year-old black woman.

On Feb. 19, 2011, authorities received a 911 call of "gunshots heard" about 9:45 p.m., said Det. Kerri Potter of the LAPD's criminal gang and homicide unit, who is handling the investigation.

King was found outside with gunshot wounds to the chest and arm, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Paramedics were called and the victim was taken to county Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where she later died.

During the investigation, detectives learned that King was walking in the area when an unknown person approached and shot her. The assailant then fled.

After the shooting, the victim called for help until she finally collapsed near the intersection of Main Street and Lanzit Avenue, officials said.

Potter said no arrests have been made in connection with the case and a motive for the shooting remains unknown.

Since January 2007, at least 184 homicides have been reported within two miles of the slaying scene, according to a Times Homicide Report database. The vast majority of those victims died of gunshot wounds.
