A story for every victim

Gregory Delonzo Johnson, 57

Gregory Delonzo Johnson, a 57-year-old black man, was fatally shot Sunday March 31 in the 9700 block of Beach Street in Watts, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Los Angeles police are searching for two suspects who left Johnson dead and his wife wounded.

The incident occurred just after 11 p.m., when Johnson went outside his home to check on a noise -- possibly a car alarm, police told KTLA-TV (Channel 5).

"He went outside to the noise that he heard, and he was confronted by a suspect," said LAPD Capt. Tom McMullen. "Our victim intended to run back inside the house, at which time the suspect chased him and shots were fired and he was struck."

They were taken to a local hospital, where the male victim died, police said. The woman was reportedly in stable condition.

Suspect descriptions were not immediately available, though police said one might have been wearing a mask. It was also not known whether they fled on foot or in a vehicle.

Investigators said they are looking into whether the suspects have a connection to the couple, and whether the car alarm might have been a ruse to lure them outside.

Anyone with information can anonymously call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
