Jesus Valenzuela, 29 [Updated]

Jesus Valenzuela, a 29-year-old Latino, died Saturday, Nov. 20, two days after he was shot in the 12600 block of Gurley Avenue in Downey, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Valenzuela was shot Nov. 18 at 8:30 a.m. and taken to the hospital where he remained until his death, said Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office. According to coroner's records, he had been shot in the abdomen.

Winter said preliminary reports showed he was injured during a possible home invasion.

The Times has contacted investigators to obtain more information about the case and will provide an update as soon as possible.

[Update Nov. 29: Two men armed with handguns entered Valenzuela's home and a fight began, according to a Downey Police Department news release.

Valenzuela was shot during the struggle and the assailants fled on foot, according to officials. They were last seen running eastbound on Imperial Highway.

Authorities said the incident was not random and the suspects may have had a possible connection to Valenzuela.

The case is currently being investigated as a home-invasion robbery.
