A story for every victim

Juan Jose Ortiz, 31

Juan Ortiz, a 31-year-old Latino, was shot several times at 151st Street and North Maie Avenue in Compton on Saturday, May 30. He was taken to a hospital where he died the following day, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Ortiz was standing on the sidewalk when a vehicle pulled up and someone inside the car fired several shots into his back, said Ed Winter, a spokesman for the coroner's office.

Authorities received a shots-fired call shortly after 11:20 p.m. on May 30 and responded to the scene; deputies found Ortiz lying in the street with several gunshot wounds, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Witnesses described the vehicle as an older Ford Thunderbird and the suspects as several black men. The men initially fled in the car south on Maie Avenue toward 152nd Street, then got out and continued on foot, according to the Sheriff's Department. Deputies took the car as evidence.

Anyone with information about this shooting is asked to call the Sheriff's Department homicide bureau at (323) 890-5500.
