A story for every victim

Rayvonne Akers, 17

Rayvonne Akers, a 17-year-old black man, was shot and killed Monday, July 5, in the 9200 block of South Firth Boulevard in Watts, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Akers was standing in a front yard about 12:20 a.m. when someone walked up, used gang language and fired, said Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office.

The shooter fled, Winter said, and Akers was taken to a hospital where he died at 2:05 a.m.

Akers is not a documented gang member, said LAPD Criminal Gang & Homicide Det. Kerri Potter, who is handling the investigation. However, authorities believe the person who shot him was a gang member, she said.

Investigators have not made an arrest in connection with the case and do not have a description of the shooter.

Anyone with information about Akers' death is asked to contact Det. Potter at (213) 485-4341. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call Crimestoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (800) 222-8477.
