A story for every victim

Rodrigo Arias, 18 [Updated]

Rodrigo Arias, an 18-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Sunday, Dec. 31, in the 200 block of East 69th Street in Florence, according to Los Angeles County coroner's officials.

Ed Winter, a spokesman for the coroner's office, said Arias apparently got into a fight with one of his neighbors. The neighbor got a shotgun and shot Arias once in the back, Winter said.

Arias was shot about 9:15 p.m. and taken to a  hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:59 p.m., Winter said.

[Update May 14, 2010: About a month after the shooting, authorities arrested Jose Santana, a 19-year-old Latino, in connection with Arias’ death and charged him with one count of murder.

Santana is currently being held at Men’s Central Jail in downtown in lieu of $2-million bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 22 at the Los Angeles Municipal Court.

If convicted, prosecutors said, Santana faces up to 25 years to life in prison.]
