Stevona Campbell, 13

Stevona Campbell, a 13-year-old black female, was found dead near Avenue P and 50th Street East in Palmdale about 6:45 a.m. Monday, May 12. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lt. David Coleman of the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau said Campbell was found wrapped in a carpet on the side of the road next to an onion field by a farmworker.  He said the coroner's office has ruled her death a homicide on Thursday morning. Coleman would not comment about the cause of death. "We're looking into contacts and relationships she may have had," Coleman said. Anyone with information is asked to call homicide detectives at (323) 890-5500.

Update: A car wash will be held at Cactus Middle School, located at 38060 20th St. East, to raise money for funeral expenses. The wash will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 17.
