Times coverage: Former NFL player charged with murder

Anthony Wayne Smith, a 43-year-old black man, was arrested early last week with two other men and charged with murder, the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office said Friday. Smith played with the Raiders between 1991 and 1998.

Authorities said on Oct. 7, Smith and two associates, Charles Eric Honest and Dewann Wesley White, killed Maurilio Ponce, a 31-year-old Latino.

Ponce was beaten and shot several times before his body was dumped near the Antelope Valley poppy fields about 11 miles west of Lancaster.

Honest, a 41-year-old black man, and White, a 32-year-old black man, have also each been charged with one count of murder. .
