A story for every victim

Featured reader comments

Comments on the Homicide Report are often addressed to the deceased. Sometimes a comment is left on a homicide victim's birthday or the anniversary of his or her death. And sometimes, it's simply when a loved one's memory is felt.

Bianca wrote recently to Raymond Leonard Vasquez, 22, who was fatally shot last May 24 in Baldwin Park.

Hey Raymond, just letting you know I was thinking about you the past couple of weeks about the good and fun times we had when we were together and as we remained friends. I know that you are looking down at our daughter that we created together and keeping her safe like you always will. And I know that you are not here physically but you are here spiritually and you're spirit is always in our presence and you will always be in my heart and all the families hearts. And we'll keep you in our memories forever. Rest In Peace Raymond You're never forgotten. I miss you. We all miss you.

A common question in Homicide Report comments is why violence continues in Los Angeles. Oldman, writing about Orlando Iles, 24 — fatally shot in West Adams last November — was reminded of a family member:

This young man looks just like my nephew. It hurts me to know that this stuff is still going on. These are real people with family and loved ones. What can we do to stop all this violence in our community???

Many people who see the 2010 film "Lost Angels: Skid Row Is My Home" write to say how inspired they are by the story of Kevin Cohen, 49. Cohen, or K.K., who is featured in the documentary, was fatally shot downtown in April 2009. Adriana commented about Cohen on March 6:

Just watched the documentary Lost Angels. I was so deeply touched by everyone's story, especially Kevin "KK" Cohen & LeeAnn. I burst into tears reading that he was killed. I still am. I'm going into non-profit work.
