A story for every victim

David Peter Juarez, 31

David Peter Juarez, a 31-year-old Latino, was fatally shot on Friday, June 28, in the 100 block of North Winton Avenue in the South San Jose Hills area of La Puente, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner records.

Juarez, a resident of East Los Angeles, was walking on Winton Avenue with a 22-year-old Latino friend around 10:35 p.m., after leaving a party, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Brandon Dean.

The friend lived in the area, Dean said, and the two were walking toward a taco truck when a dark-colored sedan pulled up near them. Two men got out and began firing at Juarez and his friend, striking them both in the upper torsos. The suspects then got back in the car and drove away, heading south on Winton.

Juarez was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:49 p.m., according to coroner's records. The cause of death was listed as a gunshot wound to the back.

His friend was taken to the hospital in critical condition, Dean said, but is expected to survive.

Investigators don't have a motive for the shooting, Dean said.

The fatal shooting was the first of three within a five-mile area in La Puente, The Times reported. The second, around 6:30 p.m. on June 30, killed Richard Tovalin, a 31-year-old Latino from La Puente, as he was sitting in his parked car talking to friends in a driveway in the 400 block of Tonopah Avenue. Two of Tovalin's friends were also struck by the gunfire, but are expected to survive, Dean said.

The following day, around 3 p.m., Luis Paul Rivera, 40, was shot in an alley in the 15400 block of Temple Avenue in La Puente. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The three shootings are the first homicides in La Puente since July 2018, according to the Los Angeles Times' Homicide Report. Before these shootings, La Puente had just three other homicides in the past five years, according to the data base.

Investigators don't know if the three recent shootings are related, Dean said.
