Christian Chavez Avelar, a 40-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by police on Monday, Nov. 27, in the 2700 block of Illinois Avenue in South Gate, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
The previous day, Avelar hit his live-in girlfriend with a handgun and ran away, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza said.
The assault sent his girlfriend to the hospital, Mendoza said, and South Gate Police officers got a warrant for Avelar’s arrest. The following evening, the girlfriend returned home and called police, saying she thought Avelar was in the area.
Officers spotted Avelar sitting inside his parked truck around 7:30 p.m. in the 2700 block of Illinois Avenue, a few blocks from his home, Mendoza said.

Will Alfredo Navarro-Leiva, a 40-year-old Latino, died Monday, Nov. 6, after he was stabbed in the 7300 block of Cloverlawn Drive in South Gate, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Navarro-Leiva was outside, in front of his home, at 5:50 p.m., when he got into an argument with his 16-year-old neighbor, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.
“During the argument, the suspect approached him and stabbed him in the chest,” Mendoza said. “We think they’ve had problems in the past, and the argument escalated for some unknown reason.”
The weapon was described as a large knife, Mendoza said.
Navarro-Leiva was pronounced dead at the scene at 6 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Hugo Enrique Avila, a 39-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Monday, July 24, in the 9200 block of California Avenue in South Gate, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
South Gate Police officers received a call about gunfire at 4:53 p.m. in a commercial building that houses a smog-check center, a gym and other businesses. When they arrived, police were directed to Avila’s office inside the building, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza said.
Avila was found inside. He had been shot in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene at 5 p.m., according to coroner’s records.
No weapon was found in the office, and investigators don’t have a motive for the shooting or a description of the gunman, Mendoza said. They hope surveillance camera footage will provide leads.

Samuel Isaac-Jesus Jimenez, a 23-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Saturday, July 15, in the 9000 block of Long Beach Boulevard in South Gate, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Jimenez and an unnamed woman checked into the Oak Tree motel at 9010 Long Beach Blvd., in the early evening of July 15, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza said.
The South Gate Police Department received a call at 7:06 p.m. about gunshots coming from Jimenez’s room, Mendoza said.
Before officers arrived, a woman was seen leaving the room and running north on Long Beach Boulevard, Mendoza said.

The incident began about 7 a.m., when a woman reported to the Los Angeles Police Department that her brown Honda Pilot had just been stolen at gunpoint, according to a statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Nancy Molina, a 33-year-old Latina, died Monday, July 4, after she was beaten and strangled in the 5200 block of Brookdale Road in South Gate, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
South Gate police were called about 4:20 a.m., after Molina’s boyfriend, Oscar Rodriguez Jr., called 911 and said his girlfriend was having difficulty breathing, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. John Corina.
Officers discovered that Molina had multiple traumatic injuries, Corina said. Paramedics performed CPR on Molina and then took her to a nearby hospital.
Rodriguez allegedly told investigators that the couple had been drinking and that Molina had fallen, Corina said. However, doctors at the hospital told investigators that her injuries seemed too severe for a fall.

Joseph Carlos Barela, a 33-year-old Latino, was shot and killed on Sunday, July 4, on the dirt path beside the Los Angeles River, west of the 710 Freeway and north of Firestone Boulevard in Bell Gardens, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Barela, a homeless man, was riding his bicycle to visit some friends when a man with a gun approached him and opened fire about 6:26 p.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. John Corina.

Franco had accompanied his friend Enrique Valverde, 22, to a body shop about 5:45 p.m. to pick up some car parts, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Eddie Hernandez.
Valverde was unhappy because the shop had not completed some work on his car on time, and he wanted some parts he said he had paid for, Hernandez said. He and Franco met with the shop owner and got into an argument that escalated to a fight, Hernandez said.

Alicia Renae Williams, a 32-year-old black woman, died Monday, April 4, after she was stabbed in the 5200 block of Pendleton Avenue in South Gate, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
South Gate Police officers were called to the residence about 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 3, regarding a spousal assault. When officers arrived, they discovered Williams and her 6-month-old daughter suffering from multiple stab wounds, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Eddie Hernandez.
