A story for every victim

Calvin Watts, 55

Calvin Watts, a 55-year-old black man, was shot and killed Sunday, Sept. 20, in the 140th block of West 131st Street in Willowbrook, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Witnesses told investigators from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department that Watts and another man were arguing about 12:53 a.m.  when the man pulled out a handgun and shot Watts in the upper body, said Lt. Victor Lewandowski.

Watts was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2:06 a.m., according to coroner's records.

Investigators believe Watts was living in his car along the industrial street where the shooting occurred, Lewandowski said.

"Even though it's a business area, there seem to be quite a few people living out of their cars in the area," he said. "We believe he was living in that corridor with all those people, but we don't know if this shooting arose out of a dispute with one of those folks."

Witnesses described the suspect as a Latino or white man who was last seen running north into an alley before he disappeared from view.
