Cedric Dominic Beadega-Staten, 31
Cedric Beadega-Staten, a 31-year-old black man, was shot and killed Tuesday, Nov. 1, in the 1000 block of El Segundo Boulevard in Athens, just north of Gardena, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Beadega-Staten drove into the parking lot of the Liquor and Joy liquor store in his silver Honda sedan about 7 p.m. and walked inside to buy something, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Mike Rosson.
While inside, Beadega-Staten got into an argument with the only other customer in the store, a 21-year-old black man, Rosson said.
Both men had different gang affiliations, Rosson said, and investigators believe the argument was gang-related.
When the two men left the store, they both pulled handguns and shot each other in the chest, Rosson said.
Beadega-Staten got into his car and drove west on El Segundo Boulevard for a short distance before crashing his car into a “No parking” sign on the sidewalk, Rosson said.
Beadega-Staten was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:25 p.m., according to coroner’s records.
The other man ran east on El Segundo Avenue until he collapsed not far from the store. He was taken to a hospital where he was in critical condition. The man is still in the the hospital, Rosson said, but is expected to survive.
Investigators are reviewing surveillance tapes of the argument and shooting and have not made an arrest in the case, Rosson said.
The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office will decide whether the man should be charged with homicide or if he acted in self-defense, he said.
Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s Homicide Bureau. Those wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
