Deontra Lajohn Gant, a 35-year-old black man, was shot and killed Saturday, June 20 in the 1500 block of West Vernon Avenue in Vermont Square, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 12:25 a.m., Gant was walking on the south sidewalk on West Vernon Avenue when a vehicle going east stopped, LAPD Det. Dave Garrido said. Two black men got out of the vehicle, chased Gant down and fired multiple gunshots.
Police said it’s unclear what type of vehicle the gunmen were in. Gant was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:55 a.m., according to coroner’s records.
