Epifanio Mercado, 37
Epifanio Mercado, a 37-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Saturday, Jan. 2, in the 11500 block of Atlantic Avenue in Lynwood, according to Los Angeles County coroner records.
The incident began about 12:25 p.m., when Mercado, also known as Rodolfo Rojo Melendres, 42, walked out of a florist’s shop and was standing next to his pickup truck, which was parked out front, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. Victor Lewandowski said.
Someone wearing a hoodie walked up, pulled out a gun and shot him multiple times, Lewandowski said.
Mercado was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead at 2:20 p.m., according to coroner’s records.
The shooter appeared to be waiting for the victim, Lewandowski said.
The gunman fled on foot, and witnesses were unable to provide any further description. Investigators have no motive for the shooting, Lewandowski said.
The victim was initially identified by the coroner's office as Melendres, based on identification he was carrying, said Ed Winter, the coroner's assistant chief of investigations, but family members later provided proof that his actual name was Mercado.
