John Cervera, a 35-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Saturday, Sept. 18, in the 6000 block of Makee Avenue in Florence-Firestone, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Cervera's family heard a gunshot then pounding on a rear house door about 2:44 a.m., said sheriff's homicide Det. Mark Lillienfeld , who is handling the investigation.

Authorities were called and Cervera was taken to St. Francis Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 4:12 a.m., according to coroner's records. He had been shot in the chest.

The incident is not believed to be gang-related, he said.
