A story for every victim

Juan Cruz Lopez Jr., 18

Juan Lopez Jr., an 18-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Wednesday, July 27, in the 200 block of South Los Angeles Street in downtown, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

[Editor's note: An LAPD press release about Lopez's death says the incident occurred in the 200 block of East 107th Street. However, the coroner's office maintains the victim was shot on Los Angeles Street.]

Shortly after midnight Wednesday, police said, Lopez was with a group of people. Investigators said neighbors reported that members of the group had been drinking and were boisterous.

LAPD homicide Det. Sal LaBarbera said several gunshots were fired and most of the crowd scattered. Lopez was left lying in a driveway with multiple gunshot wounds, he said.

Police said Lopez was taken to a hospital, but he failed to respond to emergency medical treatment and was pronounced dead.

According to coroner's records, Lopez died from a gunshot wound to the chest.

LaBarbera said investigators want to interview those at the scene, and he asked that anyone with information call him at the Criminal Gang Homicide Division, (213) 485-4341. Tipsters who’d like to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
