Kate Sue Yi, 20
Kate Yi, a 20-year-old Korean woman, was strangled to death on Thursday, April 2, in the 700 block of Bellflower Boulevard in Long Beach, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.
Yi, a Cal State Long Beach student, was found dead in her apartment by her roommate about 7 p.m., officials said.
Long Beach police said Yi and her boyfriend, Jonathan Huynh, 20, of Mission Viejo, had argued prior to her death. Detectives arrested Huynh the next day in connection with the killing.
Prosecutors have charged Huynh with one count of murder. He pleaded not guilty to the charges April 20 and is being held in county jail in lieu of $1-million bond. He is scheduled to appear in court May 12 for a preliminary hearing.
[UPDATE: An earlier version of this post described Yi's fatal injury as a penetrating wound to the base of her head. Coroner's officials said that while that was one of the injuries she sustained, her cause of death was strangulation.]
