A story for every victim

Mikie Sontero Tarango, 41

Mikie Sontero Tarango, a 41-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Monday, Dec. 23, in the 1100 block of East Larkwood Street in West Covina, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner records.

Tarango was in his garage with his brother and a female friend around 9 p.m. when two men walked up and at least one of the men began shooting, striking all three of the people inside, said West Covina Police Lt. Travis Tibbetts.

Tarango was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:25 p.m., according to coroner's records. The cause of death was listed as a gunshot wound to the chest.

His brother was taken to the hospital in critical condition but is expected to survive, Tibbetts said. The woman was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, he said.

Tarango's mother, Dianne, described her son as "a beloved father, son, grandpa, uncle and beloved friend" in an online fundraiser for his family.

"These two armed men fired continuously and didn't stop," she wrote. "When we heard the gunshots we ran out and seen Mikie Tarango my son lying on the floor, already dead. This tragic loss will forever have me and my family in shock to see Mikie dead in our backyard before the holidays and the New Years."

Investigators don't have a  motive for the shooting, Tibbetts said.
