A story for every victim

Raymond Anthony Zabala, 35

Raymond Anthony Zabala III, a 35-year-old Latino, was fatally stabbed Tuesday, June 2 in the 8400 block of Buhman Avenue in Pico Rivera, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly after 4:30 p.m., Zabala, a contractor working for AAA, had just helped a woman jump-start her car and was talking to her in the street when a man suddenly walked up and stabbed him, said Lt. Dave Coleman with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Zabala had been called to the location by the woman, who was a AAA member.

Zabala tried to run away and was chased by the assailant for a short distance before the assailant got onto a bike and rode away, Coleman said.

“This guy was totally, totally an innocent victim,” Coleman said. “Just a senseless, horrific murder.”

When deputies arrived, Zabala was found in the front doorway of a home, a short distance from where he was stabbed.

The assailant was later identified as the woman’s son, Tobias Ruben Cabrera, a 39-year-old Latino. Cabrera is estranged from his family and is a transient. He was taken into custody by the Sheriff's Department Major Crimes Bureau Friday, June 5. According to the department, Cabrera was booked on suspicion of murder and is being held in lieu of $1-million bail.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
