Sergio Lopez, a 29-year-old white man, was shot and killed Thursday, Sept. 12, in the 12100 block of 180th Street in Artesia, according to L.A. County coroner’s records.

Witnesses said they were in their homes when they heard four or five gunshots, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. People came outside, found Lopez in his driveway and called deputies about 1:10 a.m.

No suspects or vehicles were seen leaving the area. Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:37 a.m.

Disbelief is the first thing that comes to mind, I could say that he was last to deserve what happened to him that night but as an avid reader of the report I know too well that many innocent others have been unjustly taken away in a similar fashion. Many will read and assume gang affiliation as the culprit, I understand people have the right to an opinion and I respect their right to it. For those of you that happen to come across this comment I want to share some of Sergio’s best attributes, he carried the moniker Penguin, not because he was a gang member but because he actually resembled the flightless bird. He carried around a big smile and was a genuinely happy individual, knowing him since child hood I can attest to the fact that he never laid harm on another human being. A typical fun loving individual who will be sorely missed not only by friends but by the community he lived in. I need no longer wonder what it feels to lose a loved one, it is a sickening and surreal feeling. I find no solace but still I think about great memories we shared and I laugh, even if for only a second I laugh. I can go into the cliché of stating the obvious… this needs to stop, we are losing our youth etc… but I lack the heart at the moment to think of others, the fact is that you were shot in a cowardly fashion and there is no changing that. Friend, journey well. You would be proud of how everyone is coming together to help out your Mother. For those of us fortunate enough to still be here, take advantage of it… smile more, hug your kids, live your life!
