Juan Carillo Ortiz, an 18-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Saturday, Nov. 19, at the southwest corner of East Cesar E. Chavez Avenue and Carmelita Avenue in East Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Ortiz and two other men were standing in the parking lot in front of K’s Jr. Market at 4106 East Cesar E. Chavez Avenue about 5:56 p.m., when someone began shooting in their direction, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Bill Cotter.
“This one is a real mystery because nobody saw anything,” Cotter said. “People heard gunshots and saw the victims afterwards, but there is no suspect description, no direction, no anything.”
Ortiz was struck multiple times by gunfire, Cotter said. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6:35 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Cesar Alvarado Lemus, a 22-year-old Latino, died Monday, Oct. 31, after he was shot at the corner of Gerhart Avenue and Repetto Avenue in East Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Lemus was walking in the residential neighborhood with two other men about 7:30 p.m., in an area where many other people were out on the street because of Halloween, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Det. Theo Baljet.
As the men were walking south on Gerhart, a small, gray compact vehicle drove up behind them and someone inside began shooting, Baljet said.
Lemus was struck by gunfire and ran about two blocks, to the 500 block of Williamson Street, where he collapsed, Baljet said. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:28 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Fernando Zamorano, a 33-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Saturday, Aug. 13, in the 6000 block of East Olympic Boulevard in East Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Zamorano was standing in the parking lot of Lito’s Corkroom around 1 a.m. when two Latinos walked by on the sidewalk, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Steve Jauch.
Coroner’s records said Zamorano asked the men where they were from, but Jauch said he couldn’t confirm any conversation.
“We just know that two male Hispanics walked by him heading east and one of them produced a handgun and opened fire,” Jauch said.
Witnesses told investigators that the men were last seen running north through the parking lot and out of view, Jauch said.

Ernesto Cervantes, a 19-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Sunday, July 31, in the 200 block of North Alma Avenue in East Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Cervantes was walking south on the residential street around 3:28 a.m. when he passed a house where there was a party and some people standing in the frontyard, said Lt. Eddie Hernandez.
Witnesses told investigators that Cervantes “exchanged some brief words with the individuals,” said Hernandez. “There was no loud arguing – something was said to somebody about something, and then shots rang out.”
Investigators believe at least two people in the frontyard opened fire on Cervantes, Hernandez said. “The victim was seen running a short distance, and then he collapsed in the middle of the street,” he said.

Jose Rene Espinoza, a 46-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Saturday, June 11, at Union Pacific Avenue and Bonnie Beach Place in Boyle Heights, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies were called to the area about 12:29 a.m. on a “shots fired” call, said Lt. Steve Jauch.
When they arrived, the deputies found Espinoza lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound, Jauch said. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:51 a.m., according to coroner’s records.
Investigators believe Espinoza was shot where he was found, based on evidence found at the scene, Jauch said.
Espinoza lived in San Fernando, he said, and investigators don’t know why he was in the area. They have no information about suspects or a motive for the slaying.

Raymond Romo, a 20-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Thursday, June 9, in the 4100 block of City Terrace Drive in East Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department detectives.
Romo and a friend drove to Eva’s Liquor Store about 11 p.m., and Romo waited outside while his friend, the driver, went inside to buy beer, said Det. Theo Baljet.
When the friend came out, he noticed a man in a gray hooded sweatshirt walking toward his car, where Romo sat in the passenger seat, Baljet said.
By the time the friend got into the driver’s seat, the man in the sweatshirt had reached the passenger side of the car, Baljet said. The man pulled out a gun, fired one shot into Romo’s chest through the open window, and ran, the detective said.

Hilario Salazar, a 25-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Monday, May 30, in the 600 block of South Ford Boulevard in East Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Salazar was home with his family about 9:55 p.m when two men came to the door, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.
According to witnesses, Salazar spoke to the men through a security door. “There was some kind of discussion about money,” Mendoza said, and that’s when multiple shots were fired.
One of the rounds struck Salazar in the upper torso, Mendoza said. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:07 p.m., according to coroner’s records. No one else in the home was injured.

Marco Antonio Ramos, a 25-year-old Latino, died Sunday after he was shot in a location unknown to investigators, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Eddie Hernandez.
Ramos walked into Los Angeles Community Hospital in East L.A., about 2:20 a.m. with a gunshot wound to his left clavicle, Hernandez said.
Investigators believe Ramos was dropped off by a woman who drove away after he got out of the car, Hernandez said.
Ramos walked into the hospital holding his neck and then collapsed in the lobby a few minutes later, Hernandez said. He was pronounced dead at 2:41 a.m., according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Maria Yslas, an 82-year-old Latina, died Saturday, May 7, after she was beaten in the 300 block of South Woods Avenue in East Los Angeles, according to coroner’s records.
Yslas was in the home she shared with her daughter, granddaughter and great-grandchildren on May 6, when her granddaughter allegedly began to hit her, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Det. Theo Baljet.
“As far as we can tell, she got upset at her grandma and beat her up,” said Baljet. “She punched her and kicked her and possibly choked her.”
Yslas was taken to the hospital that evening with multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at 10:22 a.m. the following day, according to coroner’s records.
The granddaughter, Rebecca Surratt, a 25-year-old black woman, was arrested that evening and charged with murder.

Angel Montion, a 33-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputy on Wednesday, March 30, in the 6400 block of Northside Drive in East Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner records.
Montion was a suspect in a March 19 kidnapping and assault that happened about 9:50 a.m. on Saturday, March 19, in the 300 block of North Rowan Avenue in East Los Angeles said Lt. Joe Mendoza. A surveillance camera captured part of the the kidnapping, and the video has been widely circulated.

Larry Galvan, a 27-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Monday, Feb. 22, in the 900 block of South La Verne Avenue in East Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Shortly after noon, Galvan and his brother, Dennis, were walking south on South La Verne Avenue when they were approached by a man who shot the two, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The gunman then got into the passenger side of a sport utility vehicle and fled north on South La Verne Avenue and out of view.
Galvan and his brother were taken to a hospital, where Galvan was pronounced dead. Coroner's records identified Larry as 32, but family said he was 27.

Eduardo Edwin Rodriguez, a 24-year-old Latino, was shot to death by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies Feb. 14 at Ferris Avenue and Whittier Boulevard in East Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
The incident began about 3 a.m., when deputies noticed a car that appeared to be stripped in a mostly empty supermarket parking lot, said Lt. Eddie Hernandez. They also spotted a van parked nearby, Hernandez said, with a woman in the driver’s seat.
Investigators have found stolen vehicles in the parking lot before, Hernandez said, so the deputies drove around the block to look more closely at the car and the van.

Tommy Christoph Gamez, a 25-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Friday, Jan. 1, in the 600 block of Gerhart Avenue in East Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Residents of the single-family residential area called the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department about 12:40 a.m. to report that a driver had been shot, then struck three parked cars, Lt. Dave Coleman said.
The residents pulled the driver, later identified as Gamez, from his car, because they feared it would catch on fire, according to coroner's records.
