Fred Barragan, a 35-year-old Latino, died Saturday, March 25, after he was shot by Los Angeles police in the 2300 block of East 1st Street in Boyle Heights, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
On Saturday March 24 at 11:56 p.m, officers from the LAPD’s Hollenbeck Division were patrolling in the area when they heard gunshots being fired near North Breed and East 1st streets. Residents also reported hearing gunshots, according to a news release from the LAPD.
The officers were trying to determine the source of the gunfire when they saw Barragan walking away from the area, which is near the Metro Gold Line station.
The officers tried to detain Barragan but he began to run away, the release said.
As officers chased Barragan, he removed a handgun from his waistband, prompting officers to open fire, according to the release.

Dennis Todd Rogers, a 41-year-old black man, died Tuesday, March 7, after he was shot and killed by a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy in the 5000 block of West Slauson Avenue in Ladera Heights, according to authorities.
Rogers had taken out a membership at a 24 Hour Fitness gym on Slauson about five days earlier and had been staying at the gym some 12 hours a day since then, said Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.
Other members complained to management that Rogers had been harassing men and women in the gym, Mendoza said.
A manager called deputies about 8:35 p.m. for help removing Rogers from the gym, Mendoza said. Rogers was cooperative with deputies and agreed to leave. The manager told Rogers his membership was suspended, Mendoza said, but he could come back the next morning to discuss it with management.
Alejandro Valencia Mendez, a 70-year-old Latino, was shot by Los Angeles Police Department officers on Saturday, March 4, near West Olympic Boulevard and South Broadway downtown, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 12:30 p.m., a man was wielding a pipe outside a Carl’s Jr. restaurant in the area, said Liliana Preciado of the Los Angeles Police Department. According to coroner’s records, Mendez was attacking people with the large metal pipe.
Officers attempted to use Tasers, but after that proved ineffective, they fired at Mendez, Preciado said.
Mendez was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:14 p.m.
Police have not yet released the identify of the police officers involved in the shooting.
Jimmy Bigges Jr., a 21-year-old black man, died Friday, Feb. 17, after he was shot by three Gardena police officers in two incidents, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. Bigges used the name Jimmy Briggs Jr.
About 10:30 p.m. on Feb. 16, two Gardena Police Department patrol units noticed an argument in the parking lot of the Lucky Lady Casino in the 1000 block of West Rosecrans Boulevard, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.

Gerardo Martin Vasquez, a 52-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by California Highway Patrol officers on Monday, Feb. 6, in the 3300 block of Pico Boulevard in Santa Monica, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
CHP officers were called to the eastbound 10 Freeway near the Centinela Avenue exit about 12:20 a.m. regarding a man running on the freeway, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.

Solomon Picart, a 37-year-old black man, was fatally shot by Los Angeles police officers Tuesday, Jan. 31, in the 6400 block of Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 2 p.m., a bicyclist was stabbed along the north side of Sunset Boulevard near Ivar Avenue, said LAPD Sgt. Frank Preciado, a spokesman for the department.
The assailant ran along Sunset Boulevard and tried to get into a coffee shop, but employees held the door shut, Preciado said.
The man, later identified as Picart, then walked into the Jack in the Box on Sunset.
He stabbed a second person, Preciado said. As the second victim ran away, police officers rushed inside. Picart then knifed a third person.

Eduardo Fernandez, a 25-year-old Latino, was killed by police officers Friday, Jan. 27, in the 2900 block of West Main Street in Alhambra, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Alhambra police officers were called about 7:25 p.m. Fernandez’s mother told 911 that Fernandez was fighting with his parents and possibly had a gun, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Steve Jauch.
As the officers drove to the residence, they heard gunfire, Jauch said. Fernandez was firing a gun outside the house, Jauch said, “but we believe he was firing into the air; nobody was hit.”
When the officers arrived, Fernandez fired at the officers, Jauch said. Two officers shot back, striking Fernandez multiple times.

About 10:50 p.m. on Jan. 21, Long Beach police responded to report about gunshots in the 900 block of Via Wanda, according to a news release. They found a man with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and later released.

About 11:15 a.m., Long Beach police were dispatched to a restaurant where a woman was threatening people with a knife, according to a news release.

Michael Dwaine Rogers, a 32-year-old white man, was fatally shot by Los Angeles police Tuesday, Jan. 10, in the 1100 block of South Hope Street downtown, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Shortly before 5 p.m., a security guard saw Rogers, armed with a kitchen knife, try to carjack an L.A. City Department of Transportation officer, but the officer was able to fend him off, police said.
The transportation officer waved down two LAPD traffic officers, who confronted Rogers on South Hope Street between 11th and 12th streets.
Rogers lunged at the driver’s side of the police cruiser with the knife, police said. Ruben Lamont Randolph, a 51-year-old black man, was shot and killed by police officers on Wednesday, Jan. 4, in the 900 block of North San Antonio Avenue in Pomona, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Pomona Police officers were called to the area of North San Antonio Avenue and East Columbia Avenue about 7 p.m. regarding a man who was shooting into an apartment, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Steve Jauch.
Officers saw a man, later identified as Randolph, walking in the middle of the block, holding a handgun, said Jauch. The officers and Randolph exchanged gunfire, Jauch said, and then Randolph ran into the alley behind the apartment building.

Zhonghua Li, a 48-year-old Chinese man, died on Saturday, Dec. 24, after he was shot by deputies in the 3400 block of Greenglade Avenue in Pico Rivera, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Deputies were called to Li's residence about 4:45 p.m., according to L.A. County Sheriff’s Lt. Steve Jauch.
Family members had called 911 to report that Li had a history of mental illness and was arguing with family members and attacking them with a sharp object, Jauch said.
