Azzam Faheem Stallsworth, 31

Azzam Stallsworth, a 31-year-old black man, was shot and killed Wednesday, July 16, in the 12600 block of Prairie Avenue in Hawthorne, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 12:50 a.m., Stallsworth was driving a gold sedan with his girlfriend in the passenger seat when they stopped in an alley near her home, according to authorities.

A dark-colored SUV pulled up slowly next to Stallsworth and his girlfriend and stopped, then a person inside shot at him, according to the sheriff’s department and prosecutors.

Stallsworth drove forward several feet before crashing into an iron gate. Stallsworth was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1:38 p.m., said Ed Winter, a coroner’s spokesman. The woman was not injured.

Donte Bay McNeil, a 22-year-old black man, was arrested by the Hawthorne Police Department that day. McNeil, who is Stallsworth’s girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend, was charged July 18 with one count of murder with an allegation of lying in wait and an allegation of discharging a firearm, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

McNeil pleaded not guilty, and is due back in court Aug. 20, according to the district attorney's office.
