This week, the Homicide Report received an email from Alex Perea, whose brother Cesar Jeremias Perea was killed in Florence in March 2013.

Cesar Jeremias Perea was my beloved brother who I will never forget. He was born on Aug. 2, 1989. Cesar has four siblings ages 29, 27, 23 and 22. Cesar was the middle brother. He would have been 24 years old, turning 25 this year.
My brother was an amazing guy who we will never forget. He had a great sense of humor and was a very hard-working person. He worked as a barber ever since he finished attending John C. Fremont High School. Cesar was a very important person to the lives of his loved ones. He is still remembered every day by his friends and family. Cesar has a 5-year-old daughter he left behind.

I taught at Fremont from 2002 until it was reconstituted.. Cesar was not my student but he could have been. This is not a safe area for young men. I urge young people to not rush to have kids but to get an education and move out of South LA. I am sorry to be so harsh but South LA has a way of lowering expectations for students.

I am sorry that Cesar's life was cut short by someone who obviously had no respect for others or for the fact that Cesar had many who loved him. Now his child will grow up without a father, which is horrible.

Cesar was a barber and a good father but could have pursued a community college or four year college education and raised his family in a safe area. If you have options and you have choices, don't raise your children in South LA.

This is my conclusion after so many years of teaching in this area. Many kids suffer from post -traumatic stress syndrome just from living in the area.
It broke my heart to see so many students with such potential sell themselves short and not want to leave their friends and community but yet of my students who did leave,, they all told me that one has to leave to move into the middle class and become educated. Less than 5% of residents in South LA have a college degree.

Just by virtue of my getting my BA degree and credential, I was able to move out of a gang -infested area to an area with a low crime rate and strong community cohesion.

I urge all youth in South LA to see everything they experience as a message, as a lesson. What kind of life do you want? Then do what you have to do to get it. Don't look back. I haven't.
