Man charged in October shooting in Boyle Heights

A 23-year-old documented gang member has been charged in the October killing of a man in Boyle Heights, authorities said.

Alberto Cardenas was arrested on suspicion of murder Oct. 20, Los Angeles Police Det. Jose Ramirez said.

Detectives retrieved surveillance footage that shows Cardenas walking in the area at the time that Ricardo Herrera Jr., 21, was shot and killed, Ramirez said.

Herrera and another man were riding their bikes early on the morning of Oct. 17 near East 3rd and South Indiana streets when a person shot them, police said.

LAPD officers recognized Cardenas on the surveillance footage from previous contact with him, Ramirez said.

Cardenas was charged Oct. 24 with murder, attempted murder and possession of a firearm by a felon, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

Cardenas, who has pleaded not guilty, is due back in court Jan. 8, according to court records.
