Brian Keith Greer, a 37-year-old black man, was fatally shot Thursday, Dec. 28, in the 100 block of East Caldwell Street in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Deputies were called about 10:30 p.m. regarding a gunshot victim and found a car in the middle of the street with Greer and his cousin David Charles Greer, 37, lying nearby, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Rodney Moore.
Both men had been shot multiple times, Moore said, and were pronounced dead at the scene at 10:38 p.m.
The cousins were born just nine days apart and grew up in Compton, said Brian Greer’s best friend, Kwiince Lipscomb, but as teens, they took separate paths.

Travon Brown Jr., a 21-year-old black man, died Sunday, Dec. 3, after he was shot in the 200 block of Willowbrook Avenue in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Brown was standing near the ticket machines on the Metro Blue Line passenger platform about 3:30 p.m. when he began arguing with a group of people who got off the train, said L.A. County Sheriff's Lt. Derrick Alfred.
"Words were thrown back and forth ... it was a gang-related thing," Alfred said. "Someone got disrespected and it became a fight, then a gunshot was fired and the victim was struck."
Everyone scattered when the shots were fired, Alfred said. Brown ran a short distance then collapsed.
Paramedics took Brown to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead at 4:27 p.m., according to coroner's records. The cause of death was listed as a gunshot wound to the chest.

Rene Luque Ortiz, a 22-year-old Latino, died Thursday, Oct. 19, after he was shot in the 400 block of West Spruce Street in Compton, according to coroner’s records.
The day before he died, Ortiz was on a residential street a couple of blocks from his home about 1:40 a.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Derrick Alfred.
Investigators know little of what happened then, except that residents reported gunfire and found Ortiz lying in the front yard of a house, Alfred said.
“We don’t know if somebody pulled him into the yard or he stumbled there after he was shot,” Alfred said. “It appears he was standing on the sidewalk when someone opened fire.”
Ortiz was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead the following morning at 5:59 a.m., according to coroner's records. His cause of death was listed as a gunshot wound.

DeAnthony Wills, a 28-year-old black man, was shot and killed Sunday, Oct. 8, in the 2600 block of Lantana Street in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Wills, a resident of Perris, was visiting friends in the neighborhood about 6 p.m. when he got into an argument with a man in the middle of the street, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.
The other man pulled out a gun and began shooting at Wills, Mendoza said. The shooter, a black man in his 20s, then got into a white sedan and drove away, heading east on Lantana and north on Wadsworth Avenue, until he was out of view, Mendoza said.
Wills was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:42 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Travoy Emiel Edwards, a 47-year-old black man, was shot and killed Wednesday, Aug. 30, in the 1200 block of West Magnolia Street in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Edwards had driven to the neighborhood where he used to live and was hanging out with some people outside, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Derrick Alfred said.
Residents reported hearing the group arguing around 8:50 p.m., but things soon quieted. An hour later, gunfire was reported, Alfred said.
When deputies arrived, people were running away, and Edwards was lying on the sidewalk at West Magnolia Street and North Broadacres Avenue, Alfred said. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:59 p.m., according to coroner’s records.
Investigators don’t have any suspect information.
“It sounds like it was a walk-up and drive-away because no cars were seen driving away, but we don’t even know that for sure,” Alfred said.

Mario Rupert Melbourne Jr., a 30-year-old black man, died Monday, July 24, after he was struck by a car at the intersection of East Cypress Street and South Crane Avenue in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Melbourne had been standing outside with a big group of people about 10:55 p.m., when a man pulled up in a grey BMW sedan, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Joe Mendoza.
The man, identified as Frankie Mazen III, a 44-year-old black man, got out and began arguing with Melbourne, Mendoza said.
Melbourne's father told KTLA 5 news that Mazen was an acquaintance of Melbourne's who had been accused of stealing money from him in the past. Because of that, the father said, Melbourne asked him to leave.

Carlos Velasquez, a 22-year-old Latino, died on Monday, July 10, after he was shot in the 1900 block of West 156th Street in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Velasquez and a friend, Antonio Banda, 23, were visiting someone in a trailer at the Westland Village Mobile Home Park the night of July 9, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. John Corina said.
Deputies were called to the area around 12:18 a.m. regarding a gunshot victim. When they arrived, they discovered both Velasquez and Banda had been shot, Corina said.
Banda, a Compton resident, was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:33 a.m., according to coroner’s records.
