Luis Manuel Maldonado Ortiz, a 45-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Saturday, June 30, in the 6100 block of Palm Avenue in the city of Maywood, in southeast Los Angeles County, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Maldonado Ortiz and his two brothers were in a car outside the apartment complex where they lived when they spotted a neighbor driving recklessly through the parking lot about 6 p.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Derrick Alfred.
The brothers, who lived in separate units at the apartment complex, felt that the neighbor had a history of unsafe driving, Alfred said, so they decided to confront him.
Maldonado Ortiz and his brothers Victor and Marcel got out of their vehicle and approached their 33-year-old neighbor, Victor Manuel Rivas, who was still inside his pickup truck, Alfred said.

Elias Jimenez, a 36-year-old Latino, was fatally shot on Wednesday, June 14, in the 3700 block of East 56th Street in Maywood, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a house on the street at 4:47 p.m. regarding a gunshot victim, said Lt. Joe Mendoza.
When deputies arrived, the front door was standing open, and no one was home except Jimenez, who had been shot at least once in the upper torso, Mendoza said.

Robert Lee Santos, a 69-year-old man of Filipino and Chinese descent, died on Sunday, April 30, after he was stabbed in the 3700 block of East 53rd Street in Maywood, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Santos had brought his two school-aged children to visit with their mother, his ex-girlfriend Lilian Avila, at her home in Maywood about 6 p.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.
The two started talking on the porch of the home where Avila lived with other family members, and they got into an argument, Mendoza said. At some point, Avila pulled out a small knife and stabbed Santos at least once in the torso, Mendoza said.
Members of Avila’s family drove Santos to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:43 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Jesus Alfredo Duran, a 31-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputy Saturday, June 11, in the 5200 block of Corona Avenue in Maywood, according to sheriff's investigators.
Duran, a veteran of the U.S. Army, had been living at home with his parents, who had moved out a few days earlier "because of the volatile situation with their son," said Lt. Steve Jauch.
His family came back to the house to check on him on June 11, Jauch said, but Duran allegedly refused to open his bedroom door.

Around 11:06 p.m., deputies responded to a report of a man attempting to commit suicide, according to an L.A. County sheriff’s department statement.
When deputies arrived they saw Palencia holding in his right hand a long metal object that resembled a knife, authorities said.
Palencia allegedly brandished the metal object at the deputies and threatened to use it to cause them physical harm.

Jonathan Gabriel Moran, a 26-year-old white man, was fatally shot Saturday, March 2, in the 3800 block of East 52nd Street in Maywood, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
The incident occurred about 3:30 a.m., according to a statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The victim was shot once in the upper torso while in the back yard of his residence, authorities said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The motive for the shooting was unclear, authorities said.

Johnny Michael Lahti, a 51-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Thursday, February 14, in the 3700 block of Slauson Avenue in Maywood, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Deputies responding to a report of shots fired in the area found Lahti on a bus bench about 8:20 p.m. with a gunshot wound. He was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.

Victor Castanon, a 31-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Thursday, June 21, near Atlantic Boulevard and 52nd Drive in Maywood, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office said, police responded to a call about a traffic collision about 12:38 a.m.
When authorities arrived they discovered Castanon in a car with a gunshot wound.
Paramedics were called and the victim was taken to a hospital where he died at 1:07 a.m.
According to coroner's records, Castanon suffered several gunshot wounds to his body.

Jose Merino, a 58-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Sunday, May 9, at 55th Street and Loma Vista Avenue in Maywood, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Merino discovered that one of his parked vehicles was struck in a hit-and-run and went searching for the driver early Sunday morning, said sheriff's homicide Det. Martin Rodriguez, who is handling the investigation. In his search, Merino, a resident of Maywood, began driving through an active gang territory when he was shot at an intersection, Rodriguez said.
Although wounded Merino continued driving west for about a quarter to half a mile when his car struck two parked vehicles near Maywood and 55th Street, Rodriguez said. Residents heard the crash and called authorities.

Bryan Barraza, a 17-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Friday, Jan. 15, in the 5500 block of Gifford Avenue in Maywood, authorities said.
The shooting left Barraza dead and a 15-year-old wounded, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s officials said. The teens were attending a party and were standing on the sidewalk about 9:45 p.m. when they were shot by an unknown number of suspects, according to a Sheriff’s Department statement.
The two shooting victims were taken to hospitals, where Barraza was pronounced dead less than an hour later. The second teen is recovering, the statement said.
The shooting is being investigated as gang-related, investigators said.
