Alphonse Bernardin Jr., a 80-year-old white man, was shot and killed Saturday, Aug. 11, in the 2400 block of Colby Avenue in Sawtelle, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Los Angeles Police Officer Sara Faden said officers responding to a call for an ambulance early Saturday found Bernardin inside his home with two gunshot wounds to the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators believe that Bernardin was killed in an apparent-murder suicide resulting from a long-term business partnership. The body of Bernardin’s 56-year-old tenant was found just outside the home’s back door. The man had a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and a 9-millimeter handgun beside him, Faden said.
“The suspect was renting a converted garage in back of the home and in recent weeks, there seems to have been some sort of ongoing landlord-tenant dispute,” she said.

David Morales Jr., an 18-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Tuesday, Jan. 3, near Sawtelle Boulevard and Pearl Street in Sawtelle, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Morales and a 17-year-old companion were walking just before 7:30 p.m. when two unknown males fired several gunshots then fled the area, according to an LAPD news release.
Authorities were called and Morales was pronounced dead at the scene. The other victim was taken by a friend to a hospital where he was treated and released.
Investigators described the assailants as Latinos between the ages of 16 and 20.

Darrel Stanley, a 32-year-old white man, died Tuesday, April 13, in the 11700 block of West Olympic Boulevard in Sawtelle, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office, said Stanley was caught shoplifting at a super market about 11 p.m. He was approached and later tackled by a security guard in the parking lot, Winter said.
Stanley became unresponsive and was taken to a hospital, where he died at 11:53 p.m., according to coroner’s records.
The coroner’s office initially listed Stanley's death as a homicide. Officials have since deferred a final determination in the case pending additional tests that will not be available for another six to eight weeks.

Pedro Fernandez, a 24-year-old Latino, was shot by a police officer and died on July 6 in the 11300 block of Iowa Avenue in Sawtelle, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.
Fernandez, of Tarzana, and another man were robbing a man and a woman when a police officer drove by in an unmarked patrol car, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
When Officer Kenneth Collard got out of the patrol car, the other man ran off and Fernandez approached with an object in his hand, police said.
Collard shot Fernandez in the torso, and he died at the scene. Fernandez and the other man, identified by police as Matthew Ryan Ingels, 23, were also suspects in an earlier robbery. Ingles was found and arrested shortly after the incident.
Margarita Padilla, a 59-year-old Latino female, died Sunday, May 17, after sustaining blunt force trauma in Sawtelle, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Glen Boldware, a 47-year-old black man, was shot to death by an LAPD officer in the 1800 block N. Sawtelle Blvd. in West Los Angeles about 2:15 a.m. Friday, Jan. 4. Officer Peter Mah was patrolling the area in an unmarked car when he noticed Boldware, who allegedly was stealing from a lumber yard.
Mah followed Boldware as he drove north on Sawtelle Boulevar, and when he noticed he was being followed, Boldware allegedly stopped his car, stepped out and walked up to Mah's car carrying a lighter that looked like a small-caliber pistol. Boldware was shot several times and died instantly.
