A story for every victim

Cleo Hughes, 79 [Update]

Cleo Hughes, a 79-year-old black woman, was found dead Sunday, June 3, the 1600 block of West 66th Street in Harvard Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Hughes' son, who is an LAPD officer, dropped his mother off at her home Saturday night and called her Sunday morning but got no response, according to the LAPD.

The officer, who has not been identified, went to his mother's home Sunday about noon to check on her welfare and found her body. Paramedics were called, and Hughes was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to coroner's records, Hughes was shot in the chest and had bruising on her jaw and neck.

No arrests have been made in the case, police said, although robbery appears to be the motive for the slaying.

Anyone with information about the killing is asked to contact Dets. Michael Whelan or Luis Romero at (213) 486-6890. Those wishing to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
