Man gets 50 years to life for killing a husband picking up his wife in South L.A.

A man was sentenced June 16 to 50 years to life in state prison for the 2015 murder of a husband picking up his wife at a South Los Angeles home, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

Eduardo Moreno Garcia, 27, was found guilty April 5 of murder in the 2015 killing of 26-year-old Armando Ortega.

Another defendant, Ivan Omar Moreno, pleaded no contest on Feb. 27 to one count of voluntary manslaughter and was immediately sentenced to 12 years in state prison.

On Aug. 25, 2015, Ortega was arriving in his vehicle to pick up his wife near 45th Street and Hooper Avenue when Garcia and Moreno drove up in a van, according to prosecutors.

The van stopped and Garcia stepped out with a handgun and shot into the back window of Ortega’s car, striking him in the back of the head and killing him almost instantly, prosecutors said.
