Ruben Herrera, a 26-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by Los Angeles police Saturday, Dec. 19 at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in the 1000 block of West Carson Street in Torrance, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

LAPD officials said residents of the the Harbor Gateway neighborhood called 911 about 8 a.m. to report a man throwing bottles at an apartment complex in the 1600 block of West 207th Street. The residents "tried to resolve it themselves," said Lt. John Jenal, but ultimately called police.

Officers responded to the neighborhood and tried to talk to Herrera, Jenal said. Herrera then allegedly took a "fighting stance" and attacked the officers, at one point reaching for one officer's weapon, Jenal said.

The officers used a Taser and a carotid restraint — where pressure is applied to the sides of the neck — to take the man into custody, Jenal said.

 John Anthony Gonzalez, an 18-year-old Latino, was killed by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies Dec. 1 in the 12600 block of Pioneer Boulevard in Norwalk, according to Los Angeles County coroner records. 

The incident began about 6:30 p.m. when members of the sheriff's gang unit stopped two men walking north on Pioneer Boulevard near Imperial Highway, Lt. Victor Lewandowski said.

"Their gait was such that they [the deputies] could tell they were carrying something in their waistbands," Lewandowski said. 

When the detectives got closer, Lewandowski said, they could see one of the men trying to drop a handgun. The deputies tried to stop them, but one man, later identified as Gonzalez, allegedly pointed his gun at the deputies, and the deputies opened fire. 

Gonzalez was struck and pronounced dead at the scene at 6:46 p.m., according to coroner's records.

Miguel Cano, a 34-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by Los Angeles police on Monday, Nov. 9, in the 17400 block of Stagg Street in Lake Balboa, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 1 p.m., officers responded to a neighborhood regarding a report of a man acting bizarrely and standing in traffic, said LAPD Lt. John Jenal. As a police helicopter flew over the area, the officers observed the man and his strange behavior, and they deployed a Taser to de-escalate the situation, Jenal said.

The Taser wasn’t effective, so officers shot beanbag rounds at the man, Jenal said. As the situation escalated, shots were fired and the man was killed, Jenal said.

It was unclear how many shots were fired or whether police were engaged in a struggle before the shooting.

The officers were not seriously injured, Jenal said.

Johnny Angel Rangel, a 25-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by a sheriff’s deputy Friday, Oct. 16, in the 800 block of Ashcomb Drive in La Puente, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

The incident began about 1 a.m., when patrol deputies spotted Rangel walking at the corner of Amar Road and South Azusa Avenue in West Covina, just east of La Puente, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Det. Louis Aguilera.

Rangel allegedly made eye contact with the deputies and then ran across the street to try to talk to people standing outside a McDonald's restaurant, Aguilera said. 

The deputies suspected Rangel was a gang member, based on his tattoos and attire, and thought his behavior was suspicious, Aguilera said. Norma Guzman, a 37-year-old Latina, was shot and killed by Los Angeles police Sunday, Sept. 27 in the 2000 block of South San Pedro Street in Historic South-Central, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Police received a call about 9:30 a.m. about an unruly woman with a knife at the intersection of East 22nd and South San Pedro streets, said Sgt. Frank Preciado with the LAPD.

The two responding officers confronted the woman, who was armed with a knife with an 8-inch blade, he said. At some point, the officers fired their weapons.

The woman was taken to a local hospital, where she later died. The officers were not injured.

“Our understanding is that both officers discharged their weapons,” Preciado said.

Carlos Joseph Wilhelm, a 39-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by police officers Wednesday, Sept. 16, in the 4100 block of Willimet Street in Atwater Village, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.  

The incident began shortly after noon when Los Angeles police received reports about gunfire in the home where Wilhelm had lived with his aunt, Lorraine Gonzalez, and her elderly parents, according to the Los Feliz Ledger.

As officers and paramedics approached the house, an officer flying in a helicopter overhead spotted a man with a rifle outside, according to The Times. The man was later identified as Wilhelm.

The officers then “tactically deployed” around the house so they could evaluate any potential threats from Wilhelm and act as quickly as possible to help anyone who had been shot, LAPD Lt. John Jenal told The Times.

Florencio Chaidez, a 32-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by police officers Tuesday, Sept. 15, in the 14700 block of Parthenia Street in Panorama City, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s record. 

The incident began about 2:45 p.m., when a 911 caller reported a man with a gun near Willis Avenue and Roscoe Boulevard, according to Los Angeles Police Lt. John Jenal.

Officers from the LAPD’s Mission Division were initially unable to locate the man, who was reportedly dressed in beige clothing, Jenal told The Times. 

As officers patrolled Willis Avenue looking for the man, a person reported seeing a man with a gun on Parthenia Street east of Willis, and provided a description, according to an LAPD news release. 

The officers, identified as Officer II Patricia Barajas and Officer II Brady Cuellar, spotted a man matching the description near Willis and Parthenia Street, according to the release.

Eddie Junior Tapia a 41-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by sheriff's deputies Thursday, Sept. 10, in the 9200 block of Lakewood Boulevard in Downey, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department homicide investigators. 

Deputies shot Tapia after he held people hostage for about an hour in a Chris' and Pitt's BBQ restaurant, according to the release. 

Tapia was considered a person of interest in the shooting of his acquaintance, Rocio Lissette Vasquez, a 46-year-old Latina who lived in East Los Angeles. 

Vasquez’s body was discovered by firefighters around 6:45 a.m. as they were putting out a fire in her home, according to a statement from the sheriff’s department. Her badly burned body was found on a futon in one of the bedrooms, where the fire started.

Manuel Soriano, a 29-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by a Los Angeles police officer Friday, Aug. 28 in the 14600 block of Valerio Street in Van Nuys, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly after 11:30 p.m., two officers with the LAPD’s Van Nuys Division went to a home after a 911 caller reported a dispute among neighbors, said Sgt. Barry Montgomery. When officers arrived, they contacted the caller, who pointed them to a house next door.

The officers found a 30-year-old man inside the house, Montgomery said, and “shortly thereafter, a physical altercation ensued.”

At one point, Montgomery said, the man grabbed a 4-foot-long metal contractor’s level and started hitting one of the officers in the head and shoulders. Police then shot the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Oscar Lotari Romero, a 47-year-old Latino, died after an officer-involved shooting Wednesday, July 29, in the 12000 block of Rose Hedge Drive in Whittier, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

The incident began about 11 p.m. when Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies from the Pico Rivera Station received a call about a family disturbance, according to a department news release. 

When deputies arrived in the residential area, they were told Romero was drunk, arguing and damaging property, the release said. 

Romero came outside and allegedly told deputies that "he was going to bash their heads in," according to the release, and then went back inside. 

Romero then came out again, this time carrying a metal stick, which he allegedly swung at a deputy, striking him in the arm, according to the release.

Arturo Robert Lopez, a 46-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputy on Friday, July 3, in the 3100 block of West Avenue K-4 in Lancaster, according to L.A. County coroner’s records. 

The incident began about 11:30 p.m. when members of the Gang Unit's Operation Safe Streets Bureau were patrolling on foot and saw two men walking on the street. 

The men appeared to be intoxicated and the deputies asked them to stop and talk, but the men allegedly ignored the commands, sheriff's Lt. John Corina said.

"They actually tried to run away, and then one of the suspects pulled out a gun and fired on them," Corina said. "He didn't hit the deputies, but they returned fire and shot him."

Johnny Ray Anderson, a 42-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by a sheriff’s deputy on Sunday, July 5, in the 12200 block of 216th Street in Hawaiian Gardens, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office. 

The incident began when Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies responded to a call about a prowler around 9:40 p.m., according to a department news release. The caller reported that a man was knocking on the door, trying to get into their house, the release said.

When deputies arrived, they began searching the premises. They found Anderson in the backyard, according to the release, and the shooting occurred. 

Anderson was shot once in the upper body, according to the release. He was pronounced dead at 9:42 p.m., according to coroner’s records. 

Investigators did not find a weapon.

Cesar A. Limon Juarez, a 27-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by a police officer on Friday, July 3 in the 4100 block of Sentous Avenue in West Covina, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records. 

West Covina police officers responded to a call about 8 p.m. regarding a person suffering from stab wounds, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. 

When they arrived, the stabbing victim said he lived with his brother, later identified as Juarez, at the apartment. The man said Juarez had tried to leave the apartment with a knife, and when he tried to stop him, his brother stabbed him, according to the news release. Juarez then left the apartment walking with the knife in hand.

Adrian Simental, a 24-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by a police officer Sunday, June 21, in the 500 block of East Lee Drive in Azusa, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

The incident began at 12:52 p.m., when Simental’s family called the Azusa Police Department to report that he was acting bizarrely and had injured himself, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Det. Holly Francisco.

A short while later, the police received another report that Simental was breaking into the neighbor’s house next door. He broke out several windows, Francisco said, and entered the house through one of the windows. 

Neighbors also reported hearing a female screaming inside the house, Francisco said. 

One Azusa officer entered the house and found Simental at the back door, Francisco said, “and then the officer-involved shooting happened.”

 Hector Leonardo Morejon, a 19-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by a Long Beach police officer Thursday, April 23, in the 1100 block of Hoffman Avenue, according to a news release from the Long Beach Police Department. 

Morejon was shot in a vacant apartment about 2:45 p.m. while officers were investigating a trespassing and vandalism complaint, according to the release. Officers found an open window in the back of the apartment and a broken window.

When one of the officers looked through the broken window, he saw a man standing next to a wall, police said. The man allegedly turned toward him "while bending his knees and extending his arm out as if pointing an object, which the officer perceived was a a gun."

The officer shot at the man, critically injuring Morejon, police said. Morejon was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:40 p.m.
