Shortly before 8:30 p.m., a California Highway Patrol unit tried to pull over a motorist who was heading east on the freeway, according to a CHP news release.
During the stop, the motorist, identified as Jones, “failed to comply” with the officers’ commands and the officers opened fire, authorities said. Officer Christian Baldonado said multiple rounds were fired, but it remains unclear how many officers discharged their weapons.
The officers performed CPR and radioed for help from a nearby Los Angeles County Fire Department station, the agency said. Paramedics responded and rendered aid, but the man was pronounced dead at 8:50 p.m.

Randall Scott Fletcher, a 22-year-old Latino, died Wednesday, April 25, after he was shot in Ashiya Park, 2700 W. Beverly Blvd. in Montebello, according to coroner’s records.
Fletcher was sitting in the park around 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, when someone came up behind him and shot him in the head, said Det. Paul Antista, a homicide detective for the Montebello Police Department.
A woman walking through the park called police around 4:30 p.m. saying she had seen Fletcher sitting up earlier and thought it was weird that he was now lying in the grass, Antista said.
Fletcher was taken to the hospital, where he died four days later at 4:46 p.m., according to coroner’s records.
The shooting occurred next to a playground area in the middle of the park, but investigators don’t have any suspect information, Antista said.

Christopher Michael Diaz, a 26-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by authorities on Friday, Aug. 18, in the 2900 block of West Via Corona in Montebello, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
For almost two weeks, Montebello police and agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives searched for Diaz, who they thought had fatally shot his estranged wife, Roxann Acosta, 28. She was 15 weeks’ pregnant when she was killed.
Authorities found Diaz a few miles from his mother’s house, where Acosta and her unborn child died, according to a police report.
When officers arrived about 2:40 p.m., Diaz fled on foot. They chased him to a front yard, where Diaz drew a semi-automatic handgun, aimed at officers and fired at least one round, the news release said.

Roxann Acosta, a 28-year-old Latina, was fatally shot Sunday, Aug. 6, in the 1200 block of West Victoria Avenue in Montebello, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Montebello police responded about 10 p.m. to a call about shots fired in the area, according to Sgt. Marc Marty. Officers found Acosta at a residence with a gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:22 p.m., according to coroner’s records.
Detectives think Acosta was killed by her husband, Christopher Michael Diaz, 26, according to Marty. Acosta and Diaz were estranged but had spent the day together before ending up at Diaz’s mother’s house in Montebello, Marty said.
The two had an argument, and witnesses heard gunshots, Marty said. Diaz’s mother was in the house but in another room; other people also were in the home, Marty said.
