Anthony James Smith III, 25

Anthony James Smith III, a 25-year-old black man, was fatally wounded Monday, July 15, on the northeast corner of South Northwood Avenue and West Tichenor Street in Compton, according to L.A. County coroner’s records.

Smith arrived at his home shortly before 10:30 p.m. and was approached by three black men who began shooting, said Det. Steve Rubino with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

“The whole neighborhood heard shots,” Rubino said.

Smith was discovered by his grandmother, who called deputies, Rubino said.

Smith died at the scene at 10:57 p.m., according to coroner’s records.
