Miguel Cano, a 34-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by Los Angeles police on Monday, Nov. 9, in the 17400 block of Stagg Street in Lake Balboa, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 1 p.m., officers responded to a neighborhood regarding a report of a man acting bizarrely and standing in traffic, said LAPD Lt. John Jenal. As a police helicopter flew over the area, the officers observed the man and his strange behavior, and they deployed a Taser to de-escalate the situation, Jenal said.

The Taser wasn’t effective, so officers shot beanbag rounds at the man, Jenal said. As the situation escalated, shots were fired and the man was killed, Jenal said.

It was unclear how many shots were fired or whether police were engaged in a struggle before the shooting.

The officers were not seriously injured, Jenal said.

Dion Lamont Ramirez, a 53-year-old black man, was shot and killed by a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy Tuesday, Oct. 20, in the 400 block of West 111th Street in Vermont Vista, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly before midnight on Oct. 19, deputies saw a person “driving recklessly” near West Century Boulevard and South Vermont Avenue, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Authorities said that the driver sped off, leading deputies to a cul-de-sac in a couple miles away.  As Ramirez turned his car around and faced the deputies, a woman got out of the car. Ramirez then allegedly accelerated his car toward the passenger side of the patrol car where a deputy was standing, authorities said.

James Joseph Byrd, a 45-year-old white man, was shot and killed by two Los Angeles Police officers Saturday, Oct. 3 near Sepulveda and Victory boulevards in Van Nuys, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 11:30 p,.m., two officers were stopped at a red light when the back window of their patrol car shattered. Fearing they were under fire, police said, the officers got out of the cruiser and fired their own guns at a nearby man they believed was responsible, killing him.

When investigators searched his body and the nearby scene, they didn’t find a gun or any other weapon. Instead, they determined he had shattered the patrol car’s window by throwing a 40-ounce beer bottle.

Norma Guzman, a 37-year-old Latina, was shot and killed by Los Angeles police Sunday, Sept. 27 in the 2000 block of South San Pedro Street in Historic South-Central, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Police received a call about 9:30 a.m. about an unruly woman with a knife at the intersection of East 22nd and South San Pedro streets, said Sgt. Frank Preciado with the LAPD.

The two responding officers confronted the woman, who was armed with a knife with an 8-inch blade, he said. At some point, the officers fired their weapons.

The woman was taken to a local hospital, where she later died. The officers were not injured.

“Our understanding is that both officers discharged their weapons,” Preciado said.

The officers were wearing body cameras and the video from those cameras will be downloaded and examined as part of the investigation. There is also additional video footage …

Carlos Joseph Wilhelm, a 39-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by police officers Wednesday, Sept. 16, in the 4100 block of Willimet Street in Atwater Village, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.  

The incident began shortly after noon when Los Angeles police received reports about gunfire in the home where Wilhelm had lived with his aunt, Lorraine Gonzalez, and her elderly parents, according to the Los Feliz Ledger.

As officers and paramedics approached the house, an officer flying in a helicopter overhead spotted a man with a rifle outside, according to The Times. The man was later identified as Wilhelm.

The officers then “tactically deployed” around the house so they could evaluate any potential threats from Wilhelm and act as quickly as possible to help anyone who had been shot, LAPD Lt. John Jenal told The Times.

Florencio Chaidez, a 32-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by police officers Tuesday, Sept. 15, in the 14700 block of Parthenia Street in Panorama City, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s record. 

The incident began about 2:45 p.m., when a 911 caller reported a man with a gun near Willis Avenue and Roscoe Boulevard, according to Los Angeles Police Lt. John Jenal.

Officers from the LAPD’s Mission Division were initially unable to locate the man, who was reportedly dressed in beige clothing, Jenal told The Times. 

As officers patrolled Willis Avenue looking for the man, a person reported seeing a man with a gun on Parthenia Street east of Willis, and provided a description, according to an LAPD news release. 

The officers, identified as Officer II Patricia Barajas and Officer II Brady Cuellar, spotted a man matching the description near Willis and Parthenia Street, according to the release.

Manuel Soriano, a 29-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by a Los Angeles police officer Friday, Aug. 28 in the 14600 block of Valerio Street in Van Nuys, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly after 11:30 p.m., two officers with the LAPD’s Van Nuys Division went to a home after a 911 caller reported a dispute among neighbors, said Sgt. Barry Montgomery. When officers arrived, they contacted the caller, who pointed them to a house next door.

The officers found a 30-year-old man inside the house, Montgomery said, and “shortly thereafter, a physical altercation ensued.”

At one point, Montgomery said, the man grabbed a 4-foot-long metal contractor’s level and started hitting one of the officers in the head and shoulders. Police then shot the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Redel Kentel Jones, a 30-year-old black woman, was killed by police Wednesday, Aug. 12, in the 4100 block of Marlton Avenue in the Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw neighborhood of Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s office records. 

The incident began about 1:40 p.m. when Los Angeles police received a call about a pharmacy robbery in the 3700 block of Santa Rosalia Drive, LAPD  Det. Meghan Aguilar told The Times. 

Employees at the pharmacy said the robber was a woman who was carrying a large knife, Aguilar said. The woman allegedly handed a note to a cashier, demanding money, and then left the pharmacy with a cash-filled envelope. 

Officers began searching the area and found a woman matching the description about 20 minutes later in an alley near Marlton Avenue and Santo Tomas Drive, Aguilar said.

Seth Raines, a 44-year-old white man, was shot and killed by Los Angeles police on Friday, July 24 at 12185 Ventura Boulevard in Studio City, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

About 3:20 p.m., police said that Raines fired shots into the air and toward the ground near Vantage Avenue on Ventura Boulevard. Soon after, police responded to the scene. Terrified witnesses sought cover and hid behind police cars as officers inched closer to the man.

Witnesses said that Raines appeared to be calm as he sat on a brick ledge outside a bank.

"He just looked like he was waiting for the cops," said Paul Gilmartin, who witnessed the shooting.

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck later told reporters that investigators believe the shooting was a "suicide by cop" scenario, based on the man's actions and on interviews with family.

Jason Charles Davis, a 41-year-old white man, died Wednesday, July 15, two days after he was shot by police in the 600 block of Rose Avenue in Venice, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

On Monday, July 13, two officers from the LAPD’s Pacific Division responded to a 911 call from the Groundwork Coffee Co. in the area, said Sgt. Barry Montgomery.

The caller reported a man with a knife inside the shop, Montgomery said. LAPD officials said in a statement that the caller indicated that the man had “brandished a knife at people in the area.”

Police later identified the man as Davis. When the officers arrived, they found Davis sitting at a patio table with the knife, police said.

Neil Peter White, a 38-year-old white man, was shot by Los Angeles police on Thursday, July 9, near West 9th Street and South Sycamore Avenue in Mid-Wilshire, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

About 8:40 a.m., LAPD Wilshire Division officers went to the area after they received multiple reports of a man using a skateboard to break windows near Wilshire Boulevard and La Brea Avenue, LAPD Cmdr. Andy Smith said.

When officers arrived, Smith said, they saw a man matching the reported description riding a skateboard down South Sycamore Avenue. The officers began following him in their car.

At some point, the man fell or jumped off his skateboard, Smith said. The officers got out of their car and tried to detain him, but he did not cooperate with their commands, he said.

Jason M. Hendley, a 29-year-old black man, was killed during an officer-involved shooting on Monday, July 6, in the 13600 block of Gavina Avenue in Sylmar, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

The incident began about 10:30 a.m., when Los Angeles police officers responded to a call about a possible assault at a Sylmar home, according to LAPD spokeswoman Liliana Preciado.

When officers arrived they saw a man, later identified as Hendley, walking out of the house covered in blood and wielding a knife, Preciado said. Hendley allegedly advanced toward the officers with a knife in hand and the officers opened fire. 

Hendley was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition. He was pronounced dead at 7:46 that evening, according to coroner’s records. 

After the shooting, officers went inside the home and found a man with multiple stab wounds.

Brendon K. Glenn, a 29-year-old black man, was shot and killed by a Los Angeles police officer on Wednesday, May 6, in Venice, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

Glenn was a “traveler” who went by the name “Dizzle,”  friends told the Los Angeles Times. He and his black Lab, Dozer, had been panhandling outside a bar at 80 Windward Avenue shortly before he was shot by Clifford Proctor, a 50-year-old black LAPD officer.

Proctor and his unidentified partner were called to the area about 11:20 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5, to check out a complaint about a homeless man “harassing customers,” according to an LAPD news release. The two officers spoke briefly with Glenn, who headed back toward the boardwalk.

Andrew George Valadez, a 26-year-old white man, was shot and killed Thursday, April 23, by a Los Angeles police officer near Tyler Street and Glenoaks Boulevard in Sylmar, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly before 7 a.m. on April 22, people in the area called 911 to report a man waving a gun and threatening people, said LAPD Officer Tony Im.

When police arrived, they found Valadez pointing to his head with a weapon. Police tried to speak with Valadez, but according to police, he walked away, turned and aimed at the cops.

At least one officer shot Valadez in the torso. Valadez was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:25 a.m.

A gun was recovered at the scene.

Luis Martinez, a 35-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Tuesday, April 21, in the 3400 block of Manitou Avenue in Lincoln Heights, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly before 4:30 p.m., Martinez’s wife called 911 and told dispatchers that her husband was stabbing himself, said LAPD Det. Meghan Aguilar.

When police arrived at the home, Martinez allegedly came outside holding a hunting knife. Officers told him to put the knife down, Aguilar said, but he allegedly charged at police, prompting officers to open fire. It is unclear how many officers fired.

Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:54 p.m., said Ed Winter, assistant chief of investigations for the coroner’s office.

The identify of the officers who fired may be released after Chief Charlie Beck is briefed on the incident.
