Rony Josue Parras-Mendez, an 18-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by Los Angeles police Monday, Dec. 31 in the 13600 block of Vanowen Street in Valley Glen, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s records.

About 4:40 a.m., LAPD officers responded to an apartment regarding a call of a screaming woman, according to a news release from the department.

Parras-Mendez came to the door of the apartment armed with a “large kitchen knife,” according to police.

Police said Parras-Mendez was given commands that he ignored and “quickly moved toward one of the officers,” prompting the shooting.

Mendez was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:52 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

Police said that before the shooting, Parras-Mendez had assaulted a man who lived at the complex. The man received treatment at a local hospital.  A nine-inch knife was recovered at the scene, police said.

Christopher Deandre Mitchell, a 23-year-old black male, died Friday, Dec. 7, after being shot in Torrance, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Martin Lopez, a 24-year-old Latino male, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, after being shot by law enforcement near the 5900 block of Loveland Street in Bell Gardens, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

Albert Ramon Dorsey, a 30-year-old black man, was shot and killed by Los Angeles police on  Oct. 29 in the 6300 block of Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 9 a.m., two officers from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Hollywood Division responded to a call at a 24 Hour Fitness gym in the area, police said.

The officers, according to the police account, were led inside the gym’s locker room, where a man, later identified as Dorsey, refused to be handcuffed. Dorsey got into a physical altercation with the officers, one male and one female, and a taser was used

During the altercation, the LAPD said, Dorsey was able to grab the taser, and also punched and broke the male officer’s nose. 

Police said Dorsey also forced the other officer to the ground and punched her, which prompted the male officer to fire.

Ivan Pena, a 42-year-old Latino male, died Monday, Sept. 24, after being shot in East Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Fernando Cruz, a 18-year-old Latino male, died Saturday, Sept. 22, after being shot in East Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Rene Herrera, a 39-year-old Latino male, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, after being shot in East Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Vanessa Marquez, a 49-year-old Latina, was fatally shot by police officers Thursday, Aug. 30, in the 1100 block of Fremont Avenue in South Pasadena, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s investigators. 

Marquez was an actress who starred as student Ana Delgado in the 1988 film “Stand and Deliver,” and appeared regularly as nurse Wendy Goldman on the popular television medical drama “ER” between 1994 and 1997.

About noon on Aug. 30, Marquez’s landlord asked the South Pasadena Police Department to check on her welfare because he was worried about her health, said sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza. 

Three officers and a mental health clinician who was working with the officers went to Marquez’s home and noticed she was having “brief” seizures, Mendoza said. 

They called paramedics, who came to help Marquez, he said. The seizures ended but Marquez was not cooperative and refused to be taken to the hospital, he said. …

Michael Gregory Harrison, a 30-year-old white male, died Saturday, Aug. 18, after being shot in Culver City, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

Anthony Daniel Vargas, a 21-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies on Sunday, Aug. 12, in the 4900 block of East Cesar E. Chavez Avenue in East Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

A man reported around 2 a.m. that his watch had been stolen by three Latinos in their 30s, one with a gun tucked in his waistband, on North Mednik Avenue near the Nueva Maravilla Housing Community.

Deputies tried to detain Vargas while searching for the robbery suspects in the 504-unit housing complex, according to Lt. Derrick Alfred. Vargas ran and hid from deputies, ignored their orders and resisted their attempts to handcuff him before he pulled a gun from his waistband, Alfred said.
