Vincent Edward Hernandez Jr., a 39-year-old Latino, died Monday, Sept. 11, after he was shot by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies in the 1200 block of Stichman Avenue in the West Puente Valley community of Bassett, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Members of Hernandez’s family called deputies about 4:40 p.m. saying he was using narcotics and creating a disturbance, said Sheriff's Lt. Rodney Moore.
Deputies tried to talk to Hernandez, but he had locked himself in a bedroom, Moore said. Hernandez ignored deputies’ orders that he leave the room, and instead climbed out the bedroom window into the backyard, Moore said.
Two deputies confronted Hernandez in the backyard, Moore said, and saw that he was holding what looked like two guns, a rifle in one hand and a handgun in the other.

Christopher Michael Diaz, a 26-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by authorities on Friday, Aug. 18, in the 2900 block of West Via Corona in Montebello, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
For almost two weeks, Montebello police and agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives searched for Diaz, who they thought had fatally shot his estranged wife, Roxann Acosta, 28. She was 15 weeks’ pregnant when she was killed.
Authorities found Diaz a few miles from his mother’s house, where Acosta and her unborn child died, according to a police report.
When officers arrived about 2:40 p.m., Diaz fled on foot. They chased him to a front yard, where Diaz drew a semi-automatic handgun, aimed at officers and fired at least one round, the news release said.

Eric Paul Bogart, a 49-year-old white man, died Thursday, Aug. 10, after he was shot by police in the 1600 block of Alta Mura Road in Pacific Palisades, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 10:53 p.m., officers from the LAPD’s Pacific Division responded to a call at a home and discovered that Bogart had been arguing with a woman who lived at the residence, and the two were in an on-again, off-again relationship, said Los Angeles Police Capt. Brian Wendling.
The man, later identified as Bogart, had fired several rounds at the woman, but she escaped unharmed. When officers arrived at the home they met with a private security guard who told them the suspect had barricaded himself inside.
Police then set up a perimeter around the house and called in a SWAT team, said Officer Drake Madison, an LAPD spokesman.

Todd Gregory Hurlburt, a 53-year-old white man, was shot and killed by police Friday, Aug. 4, in the 800 block of Venice Boulevard in Venice, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Officers responded about 8:30 p.m. to a call to “keep the peace” and met a woman outside a home who said that Hurlburt, her boyfriend, was inside destroying her “personal property,” according to a news release from the Los Angeles Police Department.
As officers walked into the home, they saw Hurlburt sitting in a chair across the room with his back to the officers with a rifle in his hand, according to a news release from the department.

Jerauld Phillip Hammond II, a 46-year-old white man, was fatally shot by Los Angeles police on Thursday, July 27, in the 1700 block of Whitley Avenue in Hollywood, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 11 a.m., officers from the LAPD’s Hollywood Division responded to a call about a man with a gun at a Motel 6, police said.
The officers went to the motel’s second floor and knocked on the door, asking Hammond to come out.
After about 10 minutes, Hammond opened the door, pointed a handgun in the officer’s direction “and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” the news release said.
Hammond, who had been struck by gunfire, closed the door and barricaded himself inside.
Officers called for backup, and a SWAT team arrived, Sgt. Barry Montgomery told reporters at the scene.
SWAT officers made several attempts to contact the man, without success, he said.
Marco Cardoza, a 41-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by South Pasadena police on Thursday, June 29, in the 1400 block of Broadway in Burbank, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 8:30 a.m., two South Pasadena police officers went to a home in Burbank to serve a warrant to a woman, said Lt. Claudio Losacco, a spokesman for the Burbank Police Department. While there, officers encountered Cardoza at the residence.
Sometime during the interaction, Cardoza pointed what appeared to be a handgun at officers, and police opened fire, Losacco said. Cardoza was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:42 a.m., according to coroner’s records. Investigators later determined the gun Cardoza had was a replica.
According to Losacco, the detectives were in the area conducting an identity-theft investigation.
“The investigators knew they may encounter the now-deceased man at the home,” he said.

David Pacas, a 36-year-old Latino, died on Tuesday, June 20, after he was shot by South Gate police officers at California Avenue and Santa Ana Street in South Gate, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
The incident began about 7 a.m., when a woman reported to the Los Angeles Police Department that her brown Honda Pilot had just been stolen at gunpoint, according to a statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
About 45 minutes later, South Gate Police officers spotted the stolen vehicle and tried to get the driver to pull over, according to the Sheriff's Department.
The driver, Pacas, refused to stop, said Lt. Rodney Moore, and the officers took chase, pursuing the Honda west on Santa Ana Street to California Avenue, where it collided with five occupied and unoccupied cars.

Michele Anne Marie Rice, a 33-year-old white woman, was shot and killed by Long Beach police Wednesday, June 7, in the 3000 block of Studebaker Road in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Rice and her boyfriend were involved in an argument at a home about 12 a.m., according to a police news release. When the boyfriend left and drove away, Rice pulled out a gun and fired several shots at the vehicle, the release said.
The boyfriend called police and directed them toward the house. Upon arriving, officers told Rice to drop her weapon, but she pointed the handgun at police, according to the release. Several officers then opened fire on Rice.
Rice died at the scene at 12:55 a.m., according to coroner’s records.
Eric Rivera, a 20-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Tuesday, June 6, in the 1100 block of North Wilmington Boulevard in Wilmington, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Officers from LAPD’s Harbor Division responded about 9 p.m. to a “man with a gun” call in the area, according to a statement released by the department.
When officers arrived, they saw a lone man in his mid-20s, later identified as Rivera.
“Believing this may be the suspect from the radio call, they directed their attention toward him; at that time there was an officer-involved shooting,” the department said in the statement.
Authorities provided a vague account of what happened, but said that several shots were fired, then a police cruiser “traveled forward,” striking Rivera and pinning him underneath the vehicle, police said.
