Tavin Terrel Price, 19
Tavin Terrel Price, a 19-year-old black man, was shot and killed Friday, May 29 near 3312 W. Florence Ave. in Hyde Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 11 a.m., Price was with his mother and a family friend at a self-service car wash when a person walked up to him, LAPD Det. Chris Barling said.
The gunman confronted Price about his red shoelaces, then pulled out a gun and shot him, Barling said.
The gunman, described as a black man in his late teens or early 20s, ran away. Price’s mother chased the gunman on foot, but lost sight of the man.
Price was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead during surgery at 12:46 p.m., said Ed Winter, assistant chief of investigations for the coroner's office.
Barling said that Price has a mental disability and was not a gang member.
A woman who was with the gunman was arrested and charged with aiding and abetting. Barling declined to release the woman’s name.
Police are looking for witnesses.
