Caroline Sue Purviance, a 61-year-old white woman, was found dead Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, in the 5600 block of Mason Avenue in Woodland Hills, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Officers responded to a single-family home shortly before 8:30 p.m. and found Purviance in a bedroom, said LAPD Det. Dave Peteque.

She was pronounced dead at 8:30 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Police believe Purviance’s body had been in the bedroom for about 24 hours. Coroner's records state an autopsy showed that Purviance died of a gunshot wound to the head.

Investigators later found that Laura L. Purviance, contacted her mother Feb. 13 and asked her for a ride somewhere, Peteque said. After they ran the errand, the two walked inside the daughter’s bedroom.

As the mother played with her cell phone with her back turned toward her daughter, she was shot, Peteque said.

Alicia Espinoza, a 45-year-old Latina, was found dead Tuesday, Dec. 31 in the 1700 block of North Wilmington Boulevard in Wilmington, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Espinoza and a male in his 40s were discovered with multiple stab wounds by an employee at Oscar’s Motel, said Ed Winter, a spokesman for the coroner’s office.

The employee called police about 12:10 p.m., said LAPD Officer Giovanni Oliva.  The man was taken to a hospital, where he remains in critical condition, Oliva said. 

Espinoza, of Long Beach, was pronounced dead at 12:20 p.m., Winter said. An autopsy showed she died of multiple stab wounds.  

The two had rented the room and had been staying there for a few days, Oliva said. The investigation is ongoing.

Savannah Cree Lucero, a Latino female, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, after sustaining blunt force trauma in Downey, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Patrick Addo Odoi-Kyene, a 47-year-old black man, was shot and killed Dec. 30 in the 4200 block of Via Marina Court in Marina Del Rey, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Odoi-Kyene was found in the early morning hours in a parking lot of an upscale apartment complex with multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Witnesses heard multiple gunshots and saw a man “wearing dark clothing and a dark hooded sweatshirt” running from the scene.

Francisco Abisai Jimenez, a 20-year-old Latino male, died Friday, Dec. 27, after being shot in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Asa James Dolak, a 19-year-old white male, was shot and killed by police Thursday, Dec. 26, on a middle school campus in Torrance.

Dolak had set fire to the apartment shared by his ex-girlfriend and their 2-year-old son earlier that day, authorities said, then set his mother's home ablaze. Torrance police found him with a knife at Madrona Middle School, where school was not in session, about 1:35 p.m.

Torrance Police Sgt. Robert Watt said Dolak made it clear in telephone conversations with officers that he did not intend to be taken into custody without a fight.

"He threatened his family and threatened to kill police if confronted," Watt said. "We took that threat very serious."

The chain of events began just after midnight, when Dolak set fire to an apartment in the 16700 block of Crenshaw Boulevard. Fire crews and officers responded, rescuing the toddler.

Nery Puluc Ambrosio, a 54-year-old Latino, was fatally stabbed Wednesday, Dec. 25 in the 1900 block of East 105th Street in Watts, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly before 11 a.m., Ambrosio intervened in a fight between his wife and his stepson, when his stepson pulled out a knife and stabbed him,  LAPD Lt. Jeff Nolte said.

Investigators found that Rudy Flores, 22, had been arguing with his mother over the location of a baseball bat she had hidden from him in their apartment, according to a news release from the L.A. County district attorney’s office.  

The mother refused to tell Flores where the bat was and went to her room, according to the news release.  Flores then allegedly pushed his way into the room, where the woman and Ambrosio were. He ended up stabbing Ambrosio.

Juliana Barrios, a 24-year-old Latina, was shot and killed Wednesday, Dec. 25 in the 700 block of East 87th Street in Green Meadows, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 4:50 p.m., Barrios and a group of people were standing outside a home where a holiday party was taking place when three Latinos in a light-colored truck drove by and a person inside fired multiple rounds at the group, LAPD Det. Sal LaBarbera said.

Barrios, of Pomona, was struck and driven to Martin Luther King Jr. Multi-Service Ambulatory Care Center for treatment.  

Barrios was pronounced dead in the parking lot at 5:16 p.m. after the medical center, which does not serve trauma patients, could not provide treatment, said Ed Winter, a spokesman with the coroner’s office.
