Nereida “Neri” Villanueva, a 33-year-old Latina, was fatally shot on Saturday, July 1, in the 13900 block of Coteau Drive in South Whittier, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

Villanueva was at her apartment with her boyfriend about 11 a.m. when her ex-husband, Efrem Ruben Lozoya, arrived to drop off one of their two children, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Rodney Moore. 

After he came inside, Lozoya pulled out a gun and fired at Villanueva and her boyfriend, striking them both, Moore said. 

He then fled, leaving the children behind in the apartment, Moore said. It’s not clear if the7-year-old girl and 10-year-old boy witnessed the shooting. 

Villanueva was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:28 a.m., according to coroner’s records. Her boyfriend was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, but is expected to survive, Moore said.

Katrina Lynn Barragan, a 37-year-old Asian woman, died on Sunday, July 2, after she was stabbed in the 4200 block of Jonathon Street in Lancaster, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

Barragan and her husband, Rafael Barragan, a 47-year-old Latino, got into an argument at their home the evening of July 1, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Rodney Moore. 

Katrina Barragan called 911 about 11 p.m. and her husband hung up the phone, Moore said. The call triggered deputies to go to the home, Moore said. When they arrived, they found Rafael Barragan outside the house and his wife inside, with  stab wounds, Moore said. 

Katrina Barragan was taken to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead at 12:40 a.m. July 2, according to coroner’s records. The cause of death was listed as multiple stab wounds.

Nancy Ester Mederos Gudino, a 19-year-old Latina, died on Friday, June 30, after she was beaten in the 13900 block of Francisquito Avenue in Baldwin Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

The victim, known as Nancy Mederos, had been staying at the Grand Park Inn motel at 13921 Francisquito Avenue with her boyfriend, Nicholas Figueroa Manos, 31, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Rodney Moore. 

Baldwin Park Police officers went to the hotel in response to a “keep the peace” call about 2 p.m., according to an sheriff’s news release. 

The officers found Manos outside and Mederos inside the hotel room, with “trauma” to her upper body, Moore said. 

Mederos was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:34 p.m., according to coroner’s records. The cause of death has not been determined, according to coroner’s records. 

Manos was arrested that day and charged July 5 with murder, according to …

Fredrick Ford, a 51-year-old black man, was fatally stabbed Friday, June 30, in the 1200 block of East Harvard Street in Glendale, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

Glendale police responded about 6 p.m. to a call about an unresponsive man in the driveway of an apartment complex, according to Glendale Police Sgt. Robert William. Once there, police found Ford suffering from multiple stab wounds, William said.

Ford was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:33 p.m., according to coroner’s records. Neighbors said he lived nearby and described him as a nice man who never caused trouble. 

On the night of Ford’s death, detectives found a security camera that showed a man leaving the scene around the time of the stabbing. 

“Officers and detectives immediately recognized and identified the individual as Ernest Culbertson, a known documented gang member, who they have had numerous contacts and arrests with,” William said in a …

Urban Titus Todd, a 41-year-old black man, died Friday, June 30, after being shot in the 1100 block of West 104th Street in the Westmont area of South Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Todd was riding his bicycle near his home around 11:25 p.m. June 23 when he was confronted by a black man who asked where he was from, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Guillermo Morales said. 

Witnesses say Todd tried to get away, but the other man shot him multiple times, Morales said. 

Todd was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead seven days later at 4:55 p.m., according to coroner’s records. 

The gunman was last seen running in an unknown direction, Sgt. Steve Rubino said. 

Investigators think the gunman may have been involved in a gang. Todd had past gang affiliations but wasn’t actively involved in gang behavior when he was …

Aramazd Andressian Jr., a 5-year-old male, died Friday, June 30.

Marco Cardoza, a 41-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by South Pasadena police on Thursday, June 29, in the 1400 block of Broadway in Burbank, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

About 8:30 a.m., two South Pasadena police officers went to a home in Burbank to serve a warrant to a woman, said Lt. Claudio Losacco, a spokesman for the Burbank Police Department. While there, officers encountered Cardoza at the residence.

Sometime during the interaction, Cardoza pointed what appeared to be a handgun at officers, and police opened fire, Losacco said. Cardoza was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:42 a.m., according to coroner’s records. Investigators later determined the gun Cardoza had was a replica.

According to Losacco, the detectives were in the area conducting an identity-theft investigation.

“The investigators knew they may encounter the now-deceased man at the home,” he said.

A woman at the scene was detained and interviewed by police, Losacco said. …

Manuel Gabriel Ayala, a 38-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Wednesday, June 28, in the 1400 block of South Gibbs Street in Pomona, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

Pomona police responded about 11:30 p.m. to a call about an unresponsive man in a driveway, according to Sgt. Brian Hagerty. Once there, officers found Ayala with a gunshot to the stomach, Hagerty said. 

Ayala, who had been walking in the neighborhood, was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:52 p.m., according to coroner’s records. 

After the shooting, witnesses told detectives they saw a dark vehicle fleeing the area, Hagerty said.
