Jolynn Raeanne Finlay, a 24-year-old Latina, was fatally shot on  Friday,  Jan. 17, in the 18800 block of Crocker Avenue in Carson, according Los Angeles County medical examiner-coroner records. 

Finlay was sleeping in her boyfriend's house at 12:18 p.m. when someone broke through a window in another room and tried to rob her boyfriend of money and drugs, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Derrick Alfred. 

The intruder was carrying a gun, and during the scuffle the gun went off, sending a bullet through the wall, Alfred said. The intruder ran away to a car where his three alleged accomplices were waiting.

The boyfriend went into the next room and discovered the bullet had struck Finlay in the head as she lay sleeping, Alfred said.

Gregory Menjoe Reed, a 38-year-old black man, was shot and killed Friday, Jan. 17, near East 98th Street and South Avalon Boulevard in Green Meadows, according to Los Angeles County medical examiner-coroner’s records.

About 9 p.m., at least 15 people were gathered in the area to honor a person who had died, said Los Angeles Police Det. Nathan Kouri.

An argument broke out and shots were fired, striking Reed. Police said it’s unclear if Reed was involved in the argument.

Reed was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:18 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Karl Braggs, a 58-year-old Black male, died Thursday, Jan. 16, after being stabbed near the 7600 block of Whitsett Avenue in Florence-Firestone, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

Daniel Adam Rodriguez Ruiz, a 22-year-old Latino male, died Thursday, Jan. 16, after being shot near the 11700 block of East 166th Street in Norwalk, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

Keneth Baniaga, a 23-year-old black man, was shot and killed Tuesday, Jan. 14, in the 1700 block of West Exposition Boulevard in Exposition Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 7 p.m., Baniaga was in a car when he was cut off by another vehicle, said Los Angeles police Det. Robert Lait. Baniaga and the person in the other vehicle were “aggressive” in each of their cars and ended up pulling over and getting out of their cars to fight, police said.

The two left, then returned to the area, police said. Baniaga brought a knife, and the other person brought a gun, police said.

Baniaga was chased and then shot, Lait said. 

Baniaga was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:29 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Anthony Lopez Jr., a 20-year-old Latino, died Monday, Jan. 13, after he was shot near Bromont Avenue and Fielding street in Pacoima, according to Los Angeles County medical examiner-coroner's records.

Shortly before 10 p.m. Jan. 12, Lopez was driving a dark green Chevy Equinox in the area and may have stopped to talk to two or three people who were gathered, said Los Angeles Police Det. Al Arguelles.

An altercation occurred and Lopez was shot, police said.

Lopez then got back into his car and drove to the area of Foothill Boulevard and Vaughn Street.

Lopez honked his horn, got out of his car, said he was shot and took a couple steps before collapsing.

Lopez was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead the next morning at 7:43 a.m., according to coroner's records.

Jorge Luis Lopez, a 60-year-old Latino male, died Monday, Jan. 13, after sustaining blunt force trauma near 606 E. Holt Ave. in Pomona, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

Hector Guzman Jr., a 29-year-old Latino male, died Saturday, Jan. 11, after being shot near the 1000 block of South Bluff Road in Montebello, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

Kenneth Onyebuchi Onah, a 46-year-old black man, was shot and killed Saturday, Jan. 11, in the 15100 block of South Raymond Avenue in Gardena, according to Los Angeles County medical examiner-coroner’s records.

Shortly after 12:30 a.m., officers from the Gardena Police Department responded to a call of shots heard in the 1300 block of Marine Avenue, but didn’t find signs of a shooting or a victim, police said in a statement.

About an hour later, officers received a call of a gunshot victim in the hallway of an apartment building.

Onah was shot in the abdomen, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives believe the shooting occurred behind a security gate of the apartment complex where Onah was a resident.

Benny Norbert Aguirre, a 30-year-old Latino male, died Saturday, Jan. 11, after being shot near the 3200 block of Baldwin Park Boulevard in Baldwin Park, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

Victor Valencia, a 31-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by Los Angeles police on Saturday, Jan. 11, near South Venice Boulevard and Tuller Avenue in Palms, on the border with Culver City, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly before 1 p.m., a sergeant with the Los Angeles Police Department responded to a call of a man with a gun near South Sepulveda and Venice Boulevard, according to a video released by the LAPD detailing the incident.

The sergeant saw a man matching the description he was given, stopped his vehicle, got out and saw the man, later identified as Valencia, pointing a gun at him, according to a prepared LAPD statement.

A person in the area also said that Valencia was pointing a gun at the officer.

The sergeant began shooting at Valencia, who collapsed. Paramedics responded and Valencia was taken to a hospital, where he was …

Clara Mae Williams, a 96-year-old black woman, was found dead Friday, Jan. 10, in the 11410 block of Hawthorne Boulevard in Hawthorne, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner Coroner’s records.

Housekeepers at a hotel in the area heard two loud pops inside a room and called police, according to coroner’s records.

Police responded and found Williams and her son dead inside the hotel room, according to a news release from the Hawthorne Police Department.

Williams, who had been shot once, was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:07 p.m., according to coroner’s records. Her death was ruled a homicide.

Detectives found a suicide note and a revolver near the man, police said.

Raul Ernesto Esparza, a 44-year-old Latino, was fatally stabbed Friday, Jan. 10, in the 800 block of South Beacon Street in San Pedro, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s records.

About 3:30 a.m., Esparza was sleeping near the waterfront across the street from the post office when a person walked up to him and began to stab him, said Los Angeles Police Det. Julie Scruggs.

The person ran away, but it’s unknown in what direction, Scruggs said.

Esparza was pronounced dead at the scene at 4 a.m., according to coroner’s records.
